CGI Gases - Carbon Dioxide

Carbon Dioxide

Carbon dioxide is a colorless and non-flammable gas (at normal temperature and pressure) and commercial applications include food and beverage production, metal fabrication, cooling, fire suppression, and stimulating plant growth in greenhouses. Most commercial applications today involve direct use of CO2.

In its solid state (-78°C), carbon dioxide – also known as dry ice – is a cold source that is often used as a cryogenic fluid for processes such as fire suppression and deep freezing, due to its non-combustible properties. Carbon dioxide is emitted into the atmosphere by chemical operations and can be captured, purified for use across a multitude of industries.

CGI Gases’ distributes food grade CO2 that assure customers of high-quality gas that adheres to food safety standards.

CGI Gases Delivers Amidst CO2 Shortage

The carbon dioxide shortage that started with the pandemic continues to linger as refineries grapple with supply and demand issues. As the Federal IRS Section 45Q was amended to include a range of CO2 producers and distributers, opportunities are now available to both the industry “majors” as well as “mid-segment” players, companies, such as CGI Gases, that manufacture and distribute carbon dioxide within a specific range.

Is the shortage over? In a word, no. There are several complicating factors impacting CO2 availability: reduced production from CO2 by-product sources, specifically, ethanol and/or ammonia producers; persisting CO2 curtailment due to 2020-2021 ammonia plant shut-downs/planned pauses; intense pressures due to record summer heat waves and increased demand for cold beverages as well as dry ice; and unforeseen contamination at the Jackson Dome CO2 collection site in Mississippi.

Is CO2 available? It depends. The factors determining carbon dioxide deliveries are volume, location, and timing. Currently, CGI Gases has fulfilled all customer CO2 orders, reflecting our reputation for reliability and customer service, but we have also leveraged our long-standing industry relationships in order to form critical partnerships that assure quality product and on-time deliveries.
